Youth Wellness Alliance

Hi everyone, today we’ll be discussing another student group that frequents our campus, the Youth Wellness Alliance! The YWA is a student group that’s focused on reducing disparities between youth within our society. They focus heavily on homelessness and poverty, and believe in promoting education on a superordinate level. While still fairly new, this team is committed to creating change, and is always looking for general members!

Their group’s mission is to “provide equitable opportunities to all youth, specifically vulnerable youth through the promotion of educational and health related events and programs.” They seek to provide student supports more locally, in order to make education accessible for all. They want to “ensure students and youth can maximize their potential.”

While not a registered student group with BearsDen, the Youth Wellness Alliance’s Executive team is filled with University students, and offers high school leadership positions, on the executive team as well! As university students are regularly oversaturated with students’ clubs-content, the President, Alishba, thought it would be beneficial to incorporate a mix of both high school and University students on the team. This gives both generations of youth ( whether secondary or post secondary), an opportunity to join the group!

For those looking to get involved, the YWA offers a “general member program where students can learn about our projects and opportunities before they are made public.” This program is open to anybody and time commitment varies. They believe in open communication, and are grateful for any effort made on volunteer’s parts - big or small. A team only works if everyone is willing to get involved, and this team is hands-on with creativity and passion!

They recently held a raffle-style fundraiser over the summer, teaming up with local vendors to give away a Shoppers gift basket, various baked goods, gift cards and more. They hope to hold more in person events, (Covid-willing, to give more high school students and youth a chance to get involved.
